NEW U.S. TRAVEL DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS:

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all travelers, including U.S. citizens, to and from The Bahamas to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States.  This is a change from prior travel requirements.  The goal is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors. In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines.   The proposed timeline will be as follows:
  • January 23, 2007 – Passports, Merchant Mariner Documents (MMDs) or NEXUS Air cards would be required for all air travel from within the Western Hemisphere for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda.
  • January 1, 2008 – It is anticipated that on January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes may permit a later deadline, both the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to put all requirements in place by the original deadline. Advance notice will be provided to enable the public meet the land/sea border requirement.

Visit the U.S. Department of State's website for more information.

Current regulations allow U.S. Citizens to travel with a passport, valid or expired within 5 years, or an original Birth Certificate with a raised seal accompanied by a state photo identification.

Bahamian Citizens must have a Valid Passport and Valid US Visa or a US Alien Resident Card to enter the United States from Bimini. Visas must be obtained in advance and can be arranged thru the US Embassy in Nassau.

Citizens of the European Union visa waiver countries require a valid passport for the US and Bimini travel.

All other citizens should contact their local US and/or Bahamian Embassies or Consulates to verify their documentation requirements.
